LIGHTING DESIGNER
James F. Ingalls’ work includes designs for ballet, modern dance, opera and theatre.
Recent ballet designs include the new production of FIREBIRD for Miami City Ballet, THE SLEEPING BEAUTY for American Ballet Theatre and La Scala, and 12 new works for UNBOUND, San Francisco Ballet’s new works festival, including David Dawson’s Anima Animus.
He designed the new production of ONEGIN for National Ballet of Canada and DON QUIXOTE, COPPELIA and GISELLE for Dutch National Ballet.
His designs for modern dance include BRIEF ENCOUNTERS and CONCERTIANA for the Paul Taylor Dance Company; L’ALLEGRO, IL PENSEROSO ED IL MODERATO; THE HARD NUT; and LAYLA AND MAJNUN for the Mark Morris Dance Group, and Twyla Tharp’s 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR.
His work in opera includes the world premieres of John Adams’ NIXON IN CHINA, THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER and DOCTOR ATOMIC and Kaija Saariaho’s ONLY THE SOUND REMAINS, ADRIANA MATER and L’AMOR DE LOIN, all directed by Peter Sellars with whom he has collaborated for many years.
He designed TRISTAN AND ISOLDE for the Paris Opera, SAINT FRANÇOIS D’ASISSE, IDOMENEO and LA CLEMENZA DI TITO at the Salzburg Festival, and AINADAMAR at Teatro Real, Madrid.
Recent theatre designs include THE CHERRY ORCHARD for DRUID, Galway, and GHOSTS at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. Broadway productions include GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, THE ELEPHANT MAN and ‘NIGHT, MOTHER.
He often collaborates with the Wooden Floor dancers in Santa Ana, California.
